I broke the year in quarters, as a boy,
but not the usual seasons you'd expect:
these were based on four days I got candy--
yes, only four--my folks were dental nazis.
Easter's jelly beans and chocolate bunny,
and little yellow chicks of marshmallow:
I'd eat a few, then hoard the rest till June
in some hidden cubby in my room.
June brought my birthday, so my mom
would buy some candy--mostly for the guests.
I'd save my share aside, apportion it
throughout the summer, maybe one per week.
October's end would bring the biggest bounty:
a pillowcase or two from Hallowe'en.
The surplus had to carry me well past
the fourth and final day: Christmas Eve.
Uncle Larry would have sent a Sampler.
Then, candy canes hanging on the tree,
plus little goodies hidden in the stocking:
all that had to last until next Easter.
