Why not write poetry while walking the dog?

Writer's picture: Charles Joseph AlbertCharles Joseph Albert

As a dad and small business owner, I don't have a lot of free time. So I tried taking advantage of the quiet, meditative moments left to me when it was my turn to walk the dog--I'd write poems in my iPhone dictation app. The pastoral lyricism. The cool mornings among the peaceful quiet of my neighborhood. What could go wrong?

Well, here was my first attempt:

9. FIRST POEM IN THE DICTATION APP 9/21/15

While walking with Zoey

in the cool of the morning

and the sun just a hint in the sky—

As the birds begin singing

in the toyon and willows

and a bumble bee buzzes nearby–

hey drop it drop it drop it drop it give it to me no no yuckie do you want a treat c'mon drop it and i'll give you treat if you drop that nasty thing, come on let's go home to get a treat …
